Saturday Night & Sunday Morning - Audience

How did audiences respond to Saturday Night & Sunday Morning, and in particular Arthur's character?

  1. The film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning had a good reaction; it was nominated for 6 and won 3 BAFTA Film Awards, as well as 4 other awards.
The cinema figures were declining so the cinemas needed to think of something new to attract more audiences. They decided to make films realistic and to make real life situations in films. Saturday night and Sunday morning was one of the first social realism films. It was a popular film as it acknowledged things that actually happened in real life. Audience viewers said “if you want to know what a good slice of England looked and sounded like in the 1950s you should see it.” They felt like they were part of the film because it was a lifelike film. This started a whole new cinema of real films.
Arthur Seatons character was quite controversial because of the frank sexual situations and the freely-discussed topic of abortion but they accepted the character. It was even a film that was popular in America.
